Juwel Fish Tank Care

White Filter Floss

As the water travels down through the filter, it hits the white filter floss first.

The filter floss cleans the water of large and small dirt particles, putting a shine on the water and ensuring that dirt does not get into the filter sponges clogging them and preventing the bacteria from working.

This means that they get dirty quite quickly so these should be changed once a week.

Black Carbon Sponge

The active carbon sponge cleans the water of all chemical impurities and removes odours by absorbing them in its active carbon.

This prevents these chemical impurities from affecting the good bacteria living in the blue sponges.

If the carbon sponge is left in the filter too long, it can release the chemicals again into the water. Consequently, we recommend you replace the carbon sponge every 4 - 6 weeks.

Green Nitrax Sponge

Nitrate is relatively harmless to fish in low quantities.

The green nitrate sponge helps to keep levels of nitrate down in your tank.

Nitrax also reduces algae growth by anaerobically breaking down nitrate, thus supporting the vitality of your fish.

For maximum effect, the nitrate sponge should be changed once every 6 – 8 weeks.

Coarse Blue Sponge

The coarse blue sponge mechanically traps solid waste and holds good bacteria, allowing vital micro-organisms to colonize and clean the water. This sponge is very important as it allows for both mechanical and biological filtration.

This sponge should be changed approximately every 6 months, depending on your tank's population.

Fine Blue Sponge

This sponge is primarily used for the biological filtering of your aquarium, making it an essential component of the Juwel filter system.

The fine pore structure gives a very large surface area, guaranteeing slow and even water flow conditions. This means that it is particularly suitable for biological filtering in the an aerobic area.

The fine blue sponge should be changed approximately every 6 months, depending on the population of your fish tank.

Cirax

This biological filter medium creates the perfect colonisation environment for filter bacteria. It contains ceramic granules and the highly porous, large surface area will ensure cleaner, clearer water in your tank.

Cirax should only be changed once every 12 months.

Filter Maintenance Dos & Don'ts

Use our free water test service regularly, so you are aware of any issues quickly.

Add fish to your tank slowly to minimise ammonia levels.

Use your kitchen's cold water tap for water changes, hot taps tend to source water from a          copper tank which can be dangerous.

Never wash filter sponges under the tap.

Don't position your tank in direct sunlight, to avoid algae overgrowth.

Don't change the Fine Blue, Coarse Blue or Cirax sponges at the same time. Leave at                  least 3 weeks between changing these                      sponges.
