Neil Powell is a world renowned dog trainer who has spent over 30 years training dogs to locate people who have been lost on the mountains, trapped and buried under collapsed structures, and those who have sadly drowned and must be located under the water surface in lakes and rivers.

We are very lucky to have Neil's immense training knowledge in the local area, as he offers training classes in Newry and Annalong, for pet dogs belonging to owners who want a well trained and socialised family member.

The classes follow the Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme guidelines, and the aim is to have all attending dogs performing at Bronze Award level by the end of the six week training course.

The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Award aims to produce a dog that will walk and behave in a controlled manner on the lead, will stay in one position on command, will allow its owner to clean, groom and inspect it, a dog that will walk and behave in a happy natural manner, under control on the lead. The dog must also be able to be positioned by its handler for inspection i.e. stand, sit or lie down on either side or on its back, all on the lead. The dog must come to hand when called. The Bronze award aims to provide the handlers with a basic knowledge of understanding and training their canine companion.
The Kennel Club Bronze Good Citizen Scheme is aimed at all dogs whether Kennel Club registered or not and there is no upper age limit. All dogs must be at least 6 months of age before beginning the classes.

All dogs must be wearing correct identification, with the owner's name and address visible on an engraved tag. Dogs must also be microchipped, and owners must carry poo bags to pick up after their dog.

Alternatively, Neil offers home visits where he will visit your dog at home, to help you with any specific problems you have with your dog. He will carefully observe interactions between yourself and your pet, and teach you how to alter and redirect unwanted behaviours. This service is much cheaper than most people expect, a home visit costs around £70 (depending on location, extra milage expenses may be charged) and 1 visit is often enough to teach you how to fix all your dog's issues.

A home visit, followed by a set of classes, is usually advised if you feel that your dog may be reactive to other dogs or humans in the class environment.

Any uncontrolled, mouthing, barking, growling or other threatening behaviour is not acceptable and further training will be required before the dog can complete the course and be awarded their Bronze Good Citizen Certificate. In order for it to be meaningful the testing must be carried out thoroughly. Emphasis is placed upon the ability of the handler to handle, care for and generally be responsible for their dog.
