About Spikes Hedgehog Food - Tasty Semi Moist - 1.3kg

Spike's Tasty Semi Moist Hedgehog Food is a nutritious and tasty chicken flavoured food, suitable for Hedgehog garden visitors of all ages. It can be offered as as a food on it's own, or with other foods from the Spikes range, including Spikes Delicious Dry Food or Spikes Meaty Feast Foils.

Feeding Guide

Leave a shallow bowl or feeding tray of food out in your garden each evening at dusk, in time for Hedgehogs waking up. It can be very difficult for Hedgehogs to find sources of fresh, clean water, particularly in built up areas and in extremely cold and hot weather, so visiting Hedgehogs will also appreciate a second shallow bowl of water. Dishes should be shallow and ideally ceramic, so that they are difficult for the Hedgehogs to tip over.

If you would like to stop dogs, cats and other wild animals from stealing the Hedgehog food, you can invest in a Weatherproof Hedgehog Hotel or use a weighed down plastic bowl with a 13cm diameter hole cut in the base.

Although many people do wish to treat the Hedgehogs that visit their garden, milk, bread and mealworms should not be fed or left out when Hedgehogs may visit. Milk, bred and mealworms can cause serious illness in Hedgehogs.

Encouraging Hedgehogs to Visit Your Garden

The Hedgehog population has been drastically reducing over recent years. If you would like to encourage Hedgehogs to visit your garden, you can follow these tips to make it a Hedgehog Haven year round:

  • Leave a quiet section of your garden to grow wild, where no slug pellets or pesticides are used. This will become a safe area for visiting Hedgehogs and is a great place to leave out food and water.
  • Make it easier for Hedgehogs to visit your garden, by creating a 'safe passage' in through your fence. A 13cm (diameter) hole cut in the bottom of the fence will allso Hedgehogs to travel freely to the food and water you are leaving out for them.
  • Keep visiting Hedgehogs safe by always checking your hedges, borders and piles of grass cuttings or leaves before using garden tools like lawn mowers or strimmers and check bonfires carefully before lighting.
  • Allow your garden to be a reliable source of food year round for visiting Hedgehogs, by continuing to leave food and water out for them during the Winter. This is especially important when food is still being regularly eaten. Although Hedgehogs do usually hibernate during the coldest months of the year, generally from November to March, they can wake during hibernation and milder weather in particularly can mean that Hedgehogs are still quite active during these months.

If you find a sick or injured Hedgehog in your garden, we recommend seeking expert advice from a specialist Wildlife rescue as quickly as possible.
