Trixie Wooden Ramp: Safe & Easy Access for Happy Small Pets

Give your rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets the freedom to explore with the Trixie Wooden Ramp. Specially designed for easy hutch access, this durable ramp is the perfect solution for your furry friends to move safely and independently between their hutch and outdoor run. Promote small animal welfare and pet mobility with this essential accessory.

Crafted from strong, glazed pine, this ramp is built to last. The timber is specially treated to prevent rot, making it ideal for outdoor use in various weather conditions. For added safety, a sanded non-slip coating has been expertly applied, ensuring stable footing even in wet weather and providing the added benefit of supporting the natural wearing down of nails.

The Trixie Wooden Ramp is easy to install and versatile. With its 50cm length and 20cm width, it's perfectly sized for many setups, and for taller rabbit hutches or multi-level guinea pig cages, you can easily use additional ramp sections to create a custom access solution. Enhance your small pet enclosure with this essential accessory for safe pet movement and outdoor pet access.

Housing & Space:

  • Rabbit Hutch and Run Size: Providing adequate space is paramount for rabbit welfare. A hutch should only ever be a shelter, not the sole living space. For a pair of average-sized rabbits, the minimum hutch size should be around 180cm (L) x 60cm (W) x 60cm (H). Crucially, this must be permanently attached to a secure run that provides at least 3m x 2m x 1m (LWH) of continuous, secure space where they can run, hop, and express natural behaviours. Many advocates recommend even larger spaces where possible for optimum rabbit health.
  • Guinea Pig Hutch and Run Size: Guinea pigs also need ample space. For two guinea pigs, a hutch that is at least 120cm (L) x 60cm (W) x 60cm (H) is recommended, connected to a safe, secure run of similar or larger dimensions. They need room to run, pop, and explore. Proper guinea pig housing is vital for their well-being.
  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: While both can live indoors or outdoors, outdoor housing requires robust, predator-proof, and weather-proof accommodation. Indoors, ensure a safe, 'bunny-proof' or 'piggy-proof' environment where they can exercise freely.

Diet:

  • Hay is Key: For both rabbits and guinea pigs, high-quality feeding hay (like Timothy Hay or Meadow Hay) should make up at least 80% of their diet. It's essential for digestive health and dental wear.
  • Fresh Greens: Provide a daily variety of fresh, safe leafy greens (e.g., kale, spring greens, basil, coriander). Introduce new greens slowly.
  • Pellets: Offer a small, measured amount of high-quality, species-specific plain pellets daily. Avoid muesli-style mixes as they can lead to selective feeding and nutritional deficiencies.
  • Water: Always ensure constant access to fresh, clean water in a bottle or heavy bowl.
  • Vitamin C (for Guinea Pigs): Guinea pigs cannot produce their own Vitamin C and must get it from their diet. Ensure their greens are high in Vitamin C, or provide a suitable supplement. This is critical for guinea pig health.

Social Needs:

  • Rabbits: Are highly social animals and should always be kept in neutered pairs or compatible groups. A bonded pair is crucial for their mental well-being.
  • Guinea Pigs: Also thrive in pairs or small same-sex groups. Never keep a guinea pig alone.

Enrichment & Stimulation:
The Importance of Enrichment: Providing environmental enrichment is crucial for preventing boredom, promoting natural behaviours, and ensuring mental and physical well-being for both rabbits and guinea pigs. A large run with varied terrain, tunnels, hides, and toys is essential.

Types of Enrichment:

  • Chew Toys: Safe chew toys (untreated wood, cardboard, specific pet toys) are vital for dental health and to prevent boredom.
  • Tunnels & Hides: Both species love to hide and explore. Provide cardboard tunnels, large pipes, or specific pet tunnels.
  • Digging Boxes: A box filled with paper, soil, or safe wood shavings can provide an outlet for digging behaviour.
  • Foraging Opportunities: Scatter pellets or greens around the run to encourage natural foraging, or use forage balls and puzzle feeders.
  • Varied Levels: Add platforms, ramps (like the Trixie Wooden Ramp!), and different heights to their enclosure to encourage exploration and exercise.
  • Interaction: Daily interaction with owners, including gentle handling and playtime, is vital for their social well-being.

By prioritizing spacious housing, a balanced diet, social companionship, and ample enrichment, you can ensure your rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
