Technically, this terminology is misleading.

IATA does not individually approve, certify or endorse commercial brands or models of pet crates.

Instead, the International Air Transport Association publishes the Live Animals Regulations (LAR), including Container Requirement 1 (CR1), which provides requirements for containers used to transport dogs and cats.

What Does IATA Require From a Dog or Cat Travel Crate?

The IATA Live Animals Regulations consider much more than whether an animal can physically fit inside a box.

For a typical rigid dog or cat container, important considerations include:

Your Dog Must Be Able to Stand, Sit, Turn & Lie Naturally

How to Measure Your Dog for an Aviation Crate

IATA uses four important animal measurements when estimating minimum container dimensions.

Measurement A – Body Length

Measure from the tip of the nose to the base/root of the tail.

Do not measure all the way to the tip of the tail.

Measurement B – Leg Height

Measure from the floor to the elbow joint.

Measurement C – Body Width

Measure your dog across the shoulders or widest point of the body, whichever is greater.

Measurement D – Standing Height

Measure from the floor to the highest point of the dog's head or tips of the ears, whichever is higher, while your dog is standing naturally.

This is particularly important for dogs with naturally upright ears.

IATA Crate Size Calculation

For one dog, the approximate minimum internal container dimensions are calculated as:

Minimum Internal Length = A + ½ B

Minimum Internal Width = C × 2

Minimum Internal Height = D + bedding thickness

These are internal measurements.

This distinction is extremely important.

The external dimensions of a Petmode L100, for example, do not mean that the dog has the full external length available inside the crate. Plastic walls, moulded edges, door frames and other structural components reduce the usable internal space.

Example

Imagine a dog measures:

A: 75cm nose to base of tail
B: 30cm floor to elbow
C: 22cm body width
D: 65cm standing height

Minimum length:

75 + (30 ÷ 2) = 90cm

Minimum width:

22 × 2 = 44cm

If approximately 3cm of bedding is used:

65 + 3 = 68cm minimum height

That dog would therefore require approximately:

90cm L × 44cm W × 68cm H minimum internal space

You would then compare those figures with the internal dimensions of the available carriers.

Don't Choose an Aviation Crate by Breed Alone

Breed recommendations are useful as a rough starting point, but they cannot guarantee the correct fit.

Consider two Labradors.

One may be a compact, lightly built female while another is a tall, heavily built male. They may require different crate sizes despite being the same breed.

Likewise:

• Sighthounds can require surprisingly large crates because of their height.
• German Shepherds and similar dogs need sufficient clearance for upright ears.
• Working and show lines can differ substantially in build.
• Male and female dogs of the same breed may differ significantly in size.
• Crossbreeds cannot reliably be sized according to their breed description.

Are Petmode Aviation Crates IATA compliant?

However, individual airlines, cargo handlers and routes may apply additional or more restrictive requirements, so we strongly recommend confirming acceptance of your chosen crate directly with your airline or pet transport provider before travelling.

In particular, some carriers may require ventilation openings to be no larger than approximately 25 × 25mm. Some of the ventilation slots on Petmode Aviation Crates are narrower than 25mm but longer than 25mm, so your carrier may ask for these areas to be covered with additional mesh.

What should I do if my airline requires ventilation openings no larger than 25 × 25mm?

A suitable rigid wire mesh can be securely attached over the ventilation areas on the outside of the crate, creating openings no larger than the size permitted by your carrier. The mesh should be securely fixed so that:

• there are no sharp edges, wire ends or fixings accessible to the animal;
• it cannot become detached during handling or transport;
• it does not significantly obstruct ventilation;
• the resulting openings meet the maximum dimensions specified by your airline or pet transport provider; and
• any fixings do not project into the crate where they could injure your pet.

We recommend showing your airline, cargo agent or pet transport company photographs of the crate and, if required, the proposed mesh modification before your travel date and obtaining confirmation that they will accept it.

Airline requirements can vary, and final acceptance of any travel crate is at the discretion of the airline or handling agent. Always check the requirements for your individual journey before travelling.

Does the L120 cost more to deliver?

Yes.
